Enhancing Parliamentary Oversight of the Oil and Gas Sectors in Iraq

The Iraqi Institute for Economic Reform (IIER) is using RWI support to build the capacity of Iraqi parliamentarians to strengthen their oversight of oil and gas revenue management practices and Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI) implementation. IIER is holding trainings which seek to build the capacity and technical knowledge of MPs in EI revenue management and oversight; increase the participants’ access to training resources and expertise; and motivate parliamentarians to initiate advocacy strategies for transparent and effective use of extractive revenues.

Although Iraq is an EITI candidate country, parliament oversight is still very limited, in part because almost three-quarters of the most recently-elected parliament is composed of first-time members.

IIER is the leading independent Iraqi think tank that focuses on socio-economic development and reconstruction issues. IIER’s aim is to assist Iraq in its transition to becoming a modern state with a well-functioning market economy.
